Begg x Co + Bruce Mclean

Collaborations

Introducing a new art collaboration between Begg x Co and Scottish sculptor, painter and performance artist, Bruce McLean. A leading figure in British contemporary art, McLean is best known for his monoprints and mixed media paintings.

The Begg x Co design team carefully translated paintings from McLean’s ‘Gardenworks’ series into a limited edition woven jacquard blanket. The artworks are inspired by the play of light and shade in the garden of his Menorca studio.

McLean studied at the Glasgow School of Art and at Saint Martin’s School of Art, London, in the 1960s. He went on to become the Head of Graduate Painting at The Slade School of Fine Art, London and has helmed one-man exhibitions including at The Modern Art Gallery in Vienna and the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford. At age 27, Bruce McLean became the youngest artist to ever be offered an exhibition at Tate Britain, choosing to present a one day only retrospective.

Along his trajectory, McLean was invited by David Chipperfield to work on the interior of Tokyo’s Bingo Bingo Bango Bongo bar as well as posing for Yohji Yamamoto’s look books in the 1990s.

Closer to home, Bruce designed a new building for the Dalry Primary School, close to our Ayrshire mill and a pivotal moment in public art for the county.
