Friends of Begg x Co - Bay Garnett

Over 20 years’ experience as a stylist, editor, author and creative director of some of fashion’s most enduring images.

As the pioneer of "thrifting", Bay was the first to include vintage pieces in luxury shoots, bringing thrifting into the mainstream. Today, her second-hand credentials are more relevant than ever to the future of fashion, as a cornerstone of sustainability.

Congratulations on the launch of season two of your podcast, “This Old Thing?”. Can you tell us a little about how you came to be the “Queen of Thrift”?

Thank you very much! That is a very good question. I think because I have been thrifting for so many years now, and I was probably one of the first to incorporate second hand clothes into mainstream fashion. Its a very nice title, but my son does tease me about it!

Do you have any tips you could share for living more sustainably?

I think the first one is really to buy LESS. I'm guilty of buying too much, most of us are. But really asking yourself with each buy as to whether you really do want or need…I think to look at where something has come from too. And that is why second hand is so great. It already exists.  What it is made from etc. And all the really obvious big ones - driving less, flying less; Lessing our carbon footprint.

How do you think style will adapt in future with a more sustainable conscious focus and after a year of COVID restrictions?

I think Covid has changed the way people think about shopping.I also think that really for the first time the extent of the terrible seriousness of climate change is also making people really think; I think both combined will result in people buying less, but spending more money on the things that they love - I also think people will look to make investment pieces - objects of beauty and things that will last.

Are there any timeless wardrobe classics that everybody needs to invest in?

A blazer. A really good oversized mens blazer. I love and I get them from Oxfam online. A great old denim shirt. Has to be vintage. A thick cashmere sweater (a must) and a classic pretty shirt. Again, I go to the mens shirt section on Oxfam. I am wearing a vintage Dior one today that I found on the site. A classic.

At Begg x Co we believe we have a responsibility to craft sustainable, timeless and beautiful products that will last a lifetime…do you have a favourite cashmere item in your life? If so, what is it? Or indeed, do you have an item on your wishlist from Begg x Co?

Oh yes. I have a thick cashmere sweater by Phoebe Philo when she was creative director a Celine. I love it.

And you bet - I am big fan of Begg x Co and I love your cashmere throws. LUXURY!

What have you been doing to stay positive in this current climate?

I have been doing my podcast which has been brilliant over  the lockdown. It has been a brilliant distraction. I have also been planning exciting project with Oxfam and other projects around second hand. And some other shoots.

What are you currently reading?

I just finished the brilliant Shuggie Bain and am now reading the brilliant Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell - I really can’t recommend them highly enough.
