Local Stories - The Lido - The Curries

How are you feeling today?

I’m feeling happy – it’s my birthday today and I have been spoiled by my family!

What are you doing to stay positive in this current climate?

I am working from home which is going well. Working a full week makes the current situation easier. I’m cycling and/or walking daily and enjoying tidying the garden and doing odd jobs around the house.

I am a teacher so working from home and in our local childcare hub. I have been walking daily and doing virtual Pilates and yoga classes.  We have all had to slow down and I am enjoying having so much time to spend with my family.

How long have you been going to the Gourock Pool?

I have gone to the pool since I was a child.  I took my own children when they were young and for the last 7 or so years, I have been swimming at least 4 -5 times a week during the season.

Do you have any specific memories or stories about it?

I did my first triathlon at the pool.  When I started training I could only swim a length and would look in awe at the regular swimmers, many of whom were in their 70s or 80s and could swim length after length effortlessly. Fortunately for me, they were all very encouraging and very free with their advice…. every day I would get tips to improve my stroke…I couldn’t have had better coaches!  My favourite memory of the pool is always the hot days and the sheer enjoyment of swimming outdoors.

I remember when I was a child, the feeling of my tummy flipping as I jumped off the high dale … the water always seemed such a long way down.  As a teenager, it was the place to be seen when the sun was shining.  I remember my children screwing up their wee faces as they tasted the saltwater for the first time…. nothing an ice lolly from the kiosk couldn’t cure! My children learned to swim at the pool and spent many sunny afternoons there straight from school. In my memories, the sun seems to be shining most of the time but swimming in the rain is very special too…honestly!

What kind of swimmer are you?

I swim to stay fit. Swimming lengths. I also swim for fitness.

Have you ever been brave enough to jump from the top dale?

Yes, but not recently!

Will you be sad to miss the Gourock Pool this season?

Yes, without a doubt.  Absolutely!

We recently captured our SS20 campaign in Gourock, Inverkip & Largs – what do you find is so special about this part of the world?

The possibilities it offers and the proximity to very special places.

Definitely the beautiful views.  We are very lucky to be so close to the river and the hills.  There are many lovely areas to walk and we are just a ferry crossing away from the highlands.
