Healthy Living - Kerri Major Registered Dietitian, Sports Dietitian, Personal Trainer and Author

Bio

I am a Registered Dietitian, Sports Dietitian, Personal Trainer and author. I currently work for the NHS as an acute Dietitian, as well as a freelance Sports Dietitian, offering support to athletes and teams on how best to optimise their nutritional intake to increase their chances of sporting success. I enjoy combining my love for nutrition with my passion for movement and exercise and also offer 1:1 personal training sessions in the Glasgow area.

My goal is to help as many people as possible to become healthier, fitter and stronger. I want to help reduce the confusion there is about nutrition and encourage people to get in the kitchen and enjoy making simple, healthy and nourishing meals and snacks. I have therefore written a nutrition, recipe and fitness book called The Dietitian Kitchen: Nutrition for a Healthy, Strong & Happy You - an evidence based book which is packed full of nutrition information, 90+ recipes and a progressive workout programme, to educate and inspire you to become the healthiest, strongest and happiest version of yourself. Its available from Amazon & all good book stores.

What are you doing to stay positive in this current climate?

I do my best to try and see the positive in every situation. It's not always easy but in my opinion, it can make things just a little bit easier to deal with when a challenging situation comes your way. During this unsettling time, there are a few things that I have been doing to keep the positive vibes flowing, such as FaceTiming with family and friends as often as possible, doing some sort of movement every day, whether that be a strength workout in the flat, a run or walk outside, or some yoga. I have also being keeping a daily gratitude journal. This is something I have been trying to do from the beginning of this year, and although not always consistent with writing things down, I always try and mentally think of a few things I have been grateful for that day when I head to my bed at night. This can be something as simple as being grateful for your morning coffee, being grateful for a conversation with a family member or friend that day, being grateful for a really delicious meal or snack you've made for yourself or a random person saying hello or holding a door open for you. Something specific to that day that has put a smile on your face. Training yourself to think this way can really help you to see a positive in every day, no matter how rubbish your day has been.

Do you have a morning routine?

A morning routine is really important to me and really helps to set me up for the day ahead. My NHS job means I am currently not able to work from home so my usual morning routine is still in place whereby I enjoy a big glass of water and a delicious coffee first thing, followed by some exercise, and then devouring a nourishing breakfast before heading to work. I believe if you are having to work from home at the moment, having a morning routine can really help to give you a little bit of structure to your day. I would encourage people to aim to get up at the same time every day on the days of the week that you should be working. Given most people will be sitting at a desk or couch all day, I would also encourage people to consider doing some morning movement to get the blood flowing and waken yourself up - there are loads of social media accounts offering free live workouts to join in on. Also appreciate and enjoy having that little extra time to make a delicious breakfast from home for a change, knowing that you're not having to eat in a hurry or on the go before dashing out the door to work. Seeing the positive in every situation, right?

What are your favourite comfort recipes?

Baking is my go to. I love baking - whether that be banana bread, muffins, cakes, biscuits, traybakes. I just find it really therapeutic getting in the kitchen and love the end result that I can enjoy with a cuppa. There are loads of delicious sweet indulgent recipes in my book if you are looking for some inspiration!

We are being told to stay at home as much as we can. Do you have any at home workouts you could share with us?

Since the gyms are closed at the moment, I am enjoying and being grateful for the chance to keep active in different ways than I am used to. I am heading out a walk or a run as often as possible, making use of the one chance to exercise outside each day that we are allowed. I have also been practicing headstands (because why not?) and doing a daily yoga practice just following yoga videos on YouTube or joining in with free classes I have found online. The yoga has been a god send for keeping me calm and collected during all this. I have also been doing some of my own strength workouts from home too about 3 x per week, either doing simple body weight movements or using household items to add some weight to make it more challenging (e.g. a backpack filled with books, tins, water bottles etc.). There are so many ways we can stay active at the moment. It can be hard to motivate ourselves to workout from home but I am true believer that we need it for our mental health, just as much as our physical health at the moment. This is a temporary change in how many of us usually enjoy working out so let's use it as an opportunity to enjoy getting ourselves moving in a different way and getting creative with how we do it.
